The Queen's Medal Competition was created for the Military Forces of Jamaica in 1962 in which year Jamaica gained its independence from England.
Before 1962 the competition was just an annual shooting competition which was dominated by the late Brigadier David Smith. His last competition was in fact the first Queen's Medal Competition held in 1963. He should have won this competition but there was a mix up of targets in the final match and he shot on the wrong target, not making any score in that match. He lost to a newcomer in shooting, JDF/12596 Pte J DALEY, of the 1st Battalion, The Jamaica Regiment who was awarded Jamaica's first Queen's Medal.
